The first week of September, the school welcomed the Class of 2024. Thanks to the school’s ambitions, and with help of its patrons, this Class is more diverse and inclusive than the previous ones.
The ENS Foundation’ social scholarships, created only a couple years ago, aim to reduce the gap between students when it comes to conditions of study and living. Last year, 158 students admitted through the CNE (Concours Normalien Etudiant) received a social scholarship, which is a supplement to their state (CROUS) scholarship. The school’s ambition is to go from 25% to 30% of scholarship holders by next year.
Equal opportunities is part of École normale supérieure’s core missions in terms of teaching and research :
“École normale supérieure wants to be more inclusive than it already is, serving it missions in our society. As a school attached to the values of the French Republic, it is, wants to be, and must be diverse, inclusive and attractive to all talents” Frédéric Worms, ENS-PSL director.
The ENS Foundation’s various scholarship programs are necessary to reduce inequalities in conditions of study and living between normaliennes and normaliens, as the students who come through the CNE don’t benefit from the salary allocated to other students who have the “fonctionnaire” status.

Amongst the students who are not “fonctionnaires”, some of them are recipients of a state scholarship allocated based on their financial situation. To ensure they can dedicate all their time to their studies, the ENS Foundation collects donations to fund scholarship supplements, which amount to 75% of their state scholarship.
“In a time when the cost of living is rising, the scholarship supplement allowed me to concentrate fully on my studies and my research during all my years at ENS. Without it, I would not have been able to do many things, such as participating in and winning the Strategic Cybersecurity Challenge 9/12, an international competition.”
The ENS Foundation scholarship are entirely funded by your donations. Whatever the amount, the impact for students is concrete and immediate.
