Broadening international recruitment

The École normale supérieure (ENS) has launched an ambitious academic program for gold and silver medalists of the International Mathematical  Olympiad — and, since 2025, the International Physics Olympiad.

The goal of this initiative is to attract outstanding students to ENS immediately after high school—students who have followed alternative academic paths compared to most current ENS students and who have demonstrated exceptional scientific ability.

A Two-Stage Academic Pathway:

If a selected student has not yet completed two years of higher education, they continue their studies in their home country in the relevant subject (mathematics or physics) while also learning French. Alternatively, if admitted to the Lycée Louis-Le-Grand, they are granted “ENS-PSL-LLG Scholar” status for one to two years, during which they receive a partial scholarship.

At the end of this one- to two-year period, the student may be admitted as a full “normalien” at ENS with a three-year scholarship, provided their academic performance—at either their home university or the Lycée Louis-Le-Grand—meets the institution’s rigorous standards of excellence.

This program can span up to five years, beginning with an evaluation phase before full admission to ENS, followed by three years of study at the school if the evaluation is successful.

“I chose to apply to ENS for its world-renowned Mathematics Department, but also for its generous scholarship offer. The scholarship allows me to focus fully on my studies without worrying about my financial situation. In addition to my mathematics courses, I’m also taking French classes to help me fully integrate into the ENS community.”

Goal:

The aim is to continue the diversification of recruitment by internationalizing it while remaining competitive with top-ranked international institutions.

Your donations go towards:

Funding covers the half-scholarship for the first two years (paid on condition of attendance in the first and second years and results at the end of the first year), then the full annual “living stipend” for 3 years (over 12 months) if the candidate meets the ENS evaluation criteria, travel (2 per year) for the student to their home country, intensive French courses, individual coaching costs, but also promotional and communication actions or program management costs.

The program is currently financed by six sponsors:

  • Marie-Jo & Fabrice Cancre
  • Isabelle & Xavier Lazarus
  • Caroline & Benjamin Jacquard
  • Caroline & Etienne Becker
  • Alizée International
  • QRT

Funds raised by the Foundation are used to support ENS Foundation scholarship programs. If you have any questions about your eligibility, please contact the director of studies in your department. ENS Foundation is unable to respond to individual requests.
