Medecine and Humanities

Encouraging the training and transmission of medical humanities

In a world where medical humanities are increasingly being utilized, the Humanities In Medicine program is centered on two primary components:

  • A 3-year master’s program in the humanities at ENS, designed for medical students graduating from ENS.
  • An interdisciplinary seminar aimed at a wide audience, from future doctors to healthcare professionals as well as students from all disciplines, focusing on the “medical humanities”, where researchers in history, philosophy, ancient sciences, literature, art history, social sciences, cognitive sciences and medicine, as well as artists, will be given the floor.

The master’s program brings together 5 students per class per year, for a total of 25 students over 5 years. Three classes are currently being funded by ENS Foundation.

Goal :

Our aim is to perpetuate this program which was set up thanks to the initial support of the Bettencourt Schueller Foundation and MGEN.

« This program enables us to take a holistic approach with patients, viewing the relationship between their illness and their environment. (…)This scholarship has helped me considerably because it has granted me flexibility in my studies. I’ve realized a dream, an intellectual fulfilment in becoming a doctor; studies in the humanities provides necessary hindsight for this track. »

« My way of seeing things has changed thanks to the clinical and sociological interview approach, research conducted as part of the “Medicine & Humanities” training program. Direct contact with the patient is important for completing an understanding of their sickness, I’ll be more open and prepared for these interactions due to this program. »
